When to Hire a General Contractor vs. a Handyman in RI

LTC Contracting

When a Handyman Makes Sense

Handymen are a good fit for small, contained work: hanging shelves, swapping a door, fixing a loose cabinet, painting a room, or putting furniture together. No permits, no juggling multiple trades, no big schedule. If the job is limited and does not touch structure or major plumbing and electrical, and you are fine dealing with one person, a handyman can save you money.

When You Need a General Contractor

For bigger jobs (bathroom or kitchen remodels, whole-house flooring, anything that needs permits), use a general contractor. A GC pulls permits, coordinates plumbers, electricians, and other specialists, and is responsible for the overall outcome and timeline.

In Rhode Island, work that exceeds the state's threshold requires a registered contractor. Even when a permit isn't strictly required, a GC brings project management, insurance, and accountability that protect you if something goes wrong. For anything beyond small repairs or single-room cosmetic work, hiring a contractor is the safer and often smoother path.

Making the Choice

If you're unsure, ask yourself: plumbing, electrical, or structural? Permit required? Could things get bigger once walls are open? If any of that is yes, get a quote from a registered Rhode Island contractor. We do larger renovations and can tell you whether your job fits us or is better for a handyman.
